Lame Duck Ride

I met last week with the bicycle fitting guru of the universe. (He’s on contract for Trek) On the wall of his office hangs a picture of him with our Lame Duck President. It was taken only a few weeks ago when he was
fitting the LDP with his latest mountain bike. I felt like I was let in on what is possibly one of the best kept secrets of the Bush administration. Ok, maybe it was only secret to me, but check this out: George W Bush is an *avid* cyclist!

Don’t take my word for it, here are some stories to back it up:
Bush rides with Lance Armstrong
Bush and mountain biking 1
Bush and mountain biking 2

Are you going to let yourselves be out-pedaled by the LDP!? NO! You have two chances this week to show that you have what it takes to take destiny by the handlebars here in America’s Platinum bicycling city.

Northstar Milonga Ride
Date: Thursday November 20
Where: Staccato Gelato (NE 28th & Everett)
Whereto: Northstar Ballroom
When: 7:15 – 7:30 (meetup window)

Lame Duck Ride
Date: Saturday November 22
Where: Staccato Gelato (NE 28th & Everett)
Whereto: Euphoria Studios
When: 8:00 – 8:30 (meetup window)
What makes this the Lame Duck Ride? From Staccato Gelato to Euphoria Studios is about 1.8 miles. It’s a 10 minute downhill coast. (W could make it in 5, easy) Surely you can make it? To maximize the participation, there will be TWO meetup locations. 1) Staccato Gelato (see above) 2) Palio in Ladd’s Circle. That’s right, we will come meet you in Ladd’s Circle at 8:45 and depart promptly at 8:55 for an on time arrival at Euphoria at 9:00pm sharp! Can you dig it? Yes you can!

Voted for McCain? We want you on the ride!
Voted for W? Show me you can ride!

If you didn’t get your fill of ice cream and donuts at Staccato Gelato, you can still get a piece of cake at Palio! If anyone can tell me how I can make this ride easier or more inviting, I’m all ears!

The milonga at Euphoria goes til 7am. If you can dance all night, you can certainly ride a bike for 15 minutes. I’m expecting to see you all there.

ps. John Kerry no slouch on the bike, Obama pulls his girls in a trailer on his city bike.

We have a lot to celebrate! Are you feeling the need to revel in the public space?

Put the Public in the public space! The dancing starts at Staccato Gelato. We will dance on our bikes up to the grand re-opening of the Northstar milonga. Enjoy all the starry/rainy/starry night has to offer as we ride through Portland’s stately northeast neighborhoods. If you’ve never taken the slow cruise along Tillamook, you are in for a treat. We’ll be taking the group ride friendly Rodney street route up north instead of the Williams bike lane so we can ride together. (Thanks to rider suggestion on that)

The Green Dividend
Riding your bike is not only good for you (and everybody else), but Jerry has generously offered to give bicycle riders a discount at the Northstar milonga. Ride your bike to the milonga and pay only $5. That’s my kind of carbon credit! The future is here today.

More Milonga Rides
With the addition of the Northstar, November is full of bike rides. I’ll lead a ride to the Northstar milonga each Thursday this month (minus Thanksgiving).

Dates: November 6, 13 and 20.
Meetup time 7:15 – 7:30
Place: Staccato Gelato (28th & Everett)

Note that the start time is pretty early for a milonga ride. The first ride leaves Staccato Gelato at 7:30pm. I may adjust the start time based on how long it actually takes us to get there. If we arrive at 8pm, you can get in 4 1/2 hours of dancing on a week night!

Northstar Opening Ride

Join the ride to the restarted Northstar milonga this Thursday night.

Date: Thursday, November 6
Meetup Time: 7:15 – 7:30pm
Place: Staccato Gelato (NE 28th and Everett)

The new Northstar milonga starts at 8pm and goes until 12:30am making it the longest weekday milonga. I want to be there for the grand opening, so we’ll be leaving my favorite starting place, Staccato Gelato, around 7:30pm. It usually only takes me around 20 minutes to ride there, but I’m allowing a little extra time to see how long it takes in leisure mode.

Hello Southeast. Yes, you in Ladds, Sunnyside, Kerns, etc., I’m expecting to see you in quantity… Let’s show the dedicated riders in NE that we can represent. The route will be roughly 28th to Tillamook to Williams to Alberta. See the route on the home page. Like the rides to Berretin, if you’re anywhere near the route in NE, please come join us.

The Northstar milonga was one of my favorites because in addition to being a great milonga, there are beautiful routes to ride a bike to get there, and you can bring your bike easily to the basement for safe dry parking.

The ride takes a leisurely 20 – 30 minutes.
